Last week my friend Cary asked me if I wanted to go fast packing. We had talked about fast packing earlier this summer, but I at that point I was still on the fence about running Wasatch. Unfortunately a lingering shin injury kept me from running for most of the summer and I opted to skip Wasatch. It was a bummer to miss the race but it opened up on opportunity for a quick trip in the Oregon Cascades.
Cary had been looking at the Old Cascadia course and created a route that roughly followed the race course. Our loop was going to be all on trails and all but about 2 miles of the route I had never seen before. The route proved to be awesome following a lot of well maintained single track and offering great views of the Oregon Cascades. We took off early Sunday morning and finished up the trip Monday afternoon. Here's some pictures from the trip.
Three Fingered Jack about 0.5 miles in |
Cary leading the charge about an hour in |
Lots of huckleberries on this hillside! |
Mt. Washington, The Three Sisters, and the Three Pyramids |
A cool rock outcrop we hiked past |
Mt. Jefferson |
Mt. Jefferson |
Looking out from the Middle Pyramid. That puff of smoke is the Terwilliger Fire |
The Three Sisters |
Mt. Jefferson and Three Fingered Jack |
Mary's Peak on the horizon |
An owl Cary spotted Sunday evening |
Our last water stop Sunday evening |
Monday morning along the river |
Water dripping off the side of the hill |
That sign has been there for a while |
Big cones |
The trail really stuffs off to the right. Its hard to tell, but the drop off is pretty steep |
A nice pool |
Hillsides for another day |
Garder snake |
A tree growing on top of a rock along the ridge to Knob Rock |
Mt. Jefferson from Knob Rock |
Three Fingered Jack from Knob Rock |
Still on Knob Rock, and that's still Mt. Jefferson |
Almost back to the start |
The Three Pyramids |
The Three Pyramids over my right shoulder |
A half mile to go |
The loop is done. Just a short approach trail to the car. |
